Secondary IOLs/IOL exchange

What is intraocular lens exchange?

IOL Exchange, or intraocular lens exchange is a type of lens surgery Miss Anna Grabowska can offer for suitable patients.

Intraocular Lens Exchange is just like normal lens surgery, but instead of replacing the eye’s natural lens, a previously fitted synthetic implant is replaced with a new implant. This is sometimes necessary after previous lens or cataract surgery if the intraocular lens dislocates from its position.

The surgeon will conduct the procedure using standard or laser-assisted surgery and can significantly improve visual clarity for the patient.

How do intraocular lenses work?

Intraocular lenses are synthetic replicas of an eye’s natural lens. They work by refracting the light rays that enter the eye, allowing the patient to see clearly. Intraocular lenses are especially effective as the medical team can select the exact prescription needed for the patient.

Intraocular lenses can also correct astigmatism and similar conditions.

IOL exchange surgery is quick, painless and safe. Miss Grabowska performs the procedure under local anaesthetic and it only takes a few minutes. The procedure is fast and effective, with most patients able to go home the same day and return to their normal activities within the week. Within 24 hours most patients experience significant improvement in their vision and this increases again the following day.

Patients will have IOL exchange procedures one at a time. Once you have had the first lens exchange it is normal to wait 2-4 weeks for the next.
